The top HBCU STEM graduates earning bachelor's degrees were determined by evaluating data published by Diverse Issues in Higher Education. HBCUs have implemented proven practices to assist students in STEM fields to obtain rich professional experiences, research opportunities, and mentorships navigating through courses and financial challenges, and driving students to post-baccalaureate success. The Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, defines an HBCU as: any historically black college or university that was established prior to 1964, whose principal mission was, and is, the education of black Americans, and that is accredited by a nationally recognized. HBCUs produce 27% of African American students with bachelor's degrees in STEM fields. HBCUs are a source of accomplishment and great pride for the African American community as well as the entire nation. Despite the fact that a large majority of African American students attend predominantly white institutions, 21 of the top 50 institutions for educating African American graduates who go on to receive their doctorates in science, math, and engineering, are HBCUs. Historically Black Colleges and University’s (HBCU’s) will continue to play a substantial role.
The country’s population is constantly becoming more diversified, this opens the door for more African Americans and people of color to prepare for those careers. It has been estimated that the United States will need somewhere around 1 million science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) professionals over the next 5 or so years.
